So, if you are here, I am guessing that you are contemplating trying mindfulness, or maybe you have already tried and are wondering if you are making mistakes. The good news is that we all make mistakes, which takes us to number one on the list.

  1. No one can claim to be a mindfulness expert. We are all trying the best we can. Some days we may feel we are succeeding with mindfulness; others may find we can’t stay in the moment. The tapestry of life means that we will all have these days, and they are neither good nor bad.
  2. Start small. When we try out a new idea, we can find it very easy to get carried away and try too much too soon. Start small with a five-minute meditation, and learn how your body responds. Give yourself time to get used to your new ideas; remember, no one is an expert.
  3. You will get distracted. Children, pets, and partners will all try and get your attention when you try and settle down for a moment of practice. If you try and ignore these moments and be rigid about your practice, you will set yourself up for failure. Life is to be enjoyed.

As you can see, these points are to help reassure you. There are times when using mindfulness will be harder and times when it will be easier. Relax and allow yourself to go with where your life wants you to go.
